Vancouver, BCI was a bit distracted during this one, as I had just watched my Ottawa Senators get eliminated from the playoffs at the hands of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Maybe someday the sports lunatic in me will subside in moments like this, but for now, it is what it is.
Anyways, I did try to enjoy this, a clipping show at the Rickshaw Theatre in Vancouver, in support of their latest record, Dead Channel Sky. Their music is an off kilter blend of hip-hop and noise, with Dead Channel Sky dabbling in some more electronic influences. I only recently started listening to them, but have liked what I've heard enough to check out this show.
They brought along Counterfeit Madison as support, and brought her back out for a few songs during their own set, which was technically quite impressive, with spot-on delivery from Daveed Diggs (Snowpiercer anyone?) and chaotic beats from William Hutson and Jonathan Snipes.
I had no idea what was going on when they paused near the end of their set to bring out a guest; I didn't catch a name in the moment, and couldn't even see them from my vantage point, and only heard that it was a Vancouver native. But it was The Rita, a noise artist, who played "La Mala Ordina" with them with a wall of noise outro that lasted at least five minutes. I'm not going to pretend I knew who that was or even what was going on, but reading up on it here afterwards, it seems cool!
